Peugeot 3008 with Grip Control

A CAR for all seasons is probably the most appropriate description for Peugeot's classy-looking crossover vehicle the 3008.

Most folk, and families in particular, have long cast adrift the old notions of cars being anything other than capable of filling a multitude of roles.

The 3008 is anything but conventional; in fact it's four cars in one.

It fits the bill as a sporty SUV, a people carrier, luxury estate and courtesy of a system called Grip Control, an off-roader with a hint of 4x4 attitude.

Part of the French company's 308 range, the 3008 slots between the hatchback and SW estate models but is blessed with more presence and practicality.

The feelgood factor kicks in the moment you step inside the sensibly laid out cabin with its upmarket materials, comfortable seats and panoramic glass sunroof.

Everything feels tough, durable and likely to stand the test of time while there are plenty of cup holders, coin slots and cubbies for family paraphernalia.

Space is more than adequate for five and comfort is assured - including in the unpopular centre rear position - though the most endearing feature is actually the boot.

Not only does it have a handy split tailgate but the floor divides three ways to maximise stowage - there's even a secret covered area for valuables. Fold down the rear seats and there's a whopping 1,604 litres of load capacity.

What will also appeal to families are the likes of electronic stability as standard, automatic parking brake with hill assist, a maximum five-star safety rating, air-con, rear parking sensors and the aforementioned Grip Control.

This is an advanced traction set-up that gives a front-wheel drive vehicle almost as much off-road ability as a 4x4 and can be configured for conditions like mud, snow and sand via a rotary dial next to the handbrake.

Allure-spec versions, like the tested model, also include a fighter jet-style head-up display that projects the car's speed and distance info onto the windscreen for instant access. It costs £370 as an optional extra.

Out on the road the 3008 is a pleasure to drive with a smooth ride and strong performance from its 2.0-litre diesel engine - with 150PS on tap, the Peugeot certainly isn't short on punch.

The official Combined fuel figure is 51.3mpg and though my own average was well below that mark at 41mpg, the majority of that mileage was completed in urban conditions.

A flat-bottomed steering wheel adds a sporty touch to the experience and despite feeling a big, solid vehicle the 3008 rides beautifully, feels rock solid on the road and is well insulated too.
