A NEW diesel engine is being introduced by Korean car maker SsangYong in the Korando compact SUV.

The 2.2-litre engine replaces the 2.0-litre block used in the current model and sees fuel economy improve by some 15 per cent.

There is also a new auto option which will be available in the range topping ELX 4x4 models.

The new diesel meets the latest Euro 6 emissions standards and in the two-wheel-drive manual versions of the Korando results in an official fuel return of 53.3mpg with a CO2 figure of 139g/km - up from 41.7mpg and 147g/km.

The range now comprises three trim levels with the entry level Korando SE now priced from £15,995, an increase of £1,000.

Power is increased by almost 20 per cent to 178ps and the new engine also delivers 11 per cent more torque.

The Korando SE comes with air conditioning and cruise control as standard and the new models are now fitted with roof rails, front fog lamps and a rear parcel shelf. 4x4 versions are priced from £17,495.

The new range topping Korando ELX is purely a 4x4 and includes sat nav and leather upholstery as standard for £20,995 with the auto priced from £22,495.

Other changes across the range include a gloss black radiator grille and new-look alloy wheels while all models now feature Bluetooth connectivity.

Fuel figures for the auto are rated at 41.5mpg with emissions of 177g/km.
